Workshop Overview:

As the therapeutic and spiritual use of psychedelics gains popularity, it is critical to understand the cardiovascular risks associated with their use, particularly among individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or risk factors. This webinar, led by Dr. Benjamin Malcolm, PharmD, MPH (Spirit Pharmacist), provides a detailed examination of the cardiovascular effects of a range of psychedelics, including tryptamine and ergoline compounds like psilocybin, LSD, and DMT, as well as the dissociative ketamine and phenethylamines such as MDMA.

Participants will gain an evidence-informed framework for cardiovascular screening, learn to assess intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors, and explore pharmacologic mechanisms underlying hemodynamic changes during psychedelic experiences. The session will also address limitations in current clinical trial data, discuss risk profiles across different routes of administration, and highlight harm reduction practices tailored to cardiovascular health.

By integrating observational findings, clinical pharmacology, and practical strategies, this webinar aims to empower clinicians, facilitators, and healthcare practitioners to make informed decisions about candidate eligibility, session preparation, and emergency response planning. Special attention will be given to identifying populations at elevated risk, medication considerations, and best practices for managing acute cardiovascular events in psychedelic settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline a systematic rationale for cardiovascular screening prior to psychedelic experiences
  • Describe the hemodynamic effects of ketamine and serotonergic psychedelics and their clinical implications
  • Recognize key cardiovascular risk factors, stratify risk severity, and assess medication profiles
  • Understand emergency preparedness strategies and harm reduction approaches to mitigate cardiovascular complications
  • Critically evaluate the gaps in current clinical trial data and their relevance to real-world practice
  • Review case example intake forms and discuss their contents
