Workshop Overview:
Palliative care and life-threatening illness present some of the most complex and meaningful challenges in clinical practice. Patients often face not only physical symptoms, but profound psychological, existential, and spiritual distress, including fear of death, loss of meaning, and demoralization.
At the same time, interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies has rapidly expanded, particularly for addressing existential distress, treatment-resistant depression, and end-of-life anxiety. Emerging evidence suggests that substances such as psilocybin, ketamine, and MDMA may offer unique benefits in these contexts, but their use requires careful, nuanced clinical judgment.
This 2-hour webinar workshop explores the intersection of palliative care, life-threatening illness, and psychedelic pharmacology, with an emphasis on safety, clinical decision-making, and real-world application.
Participant Learning Objectives
- Evaluate patient appropriateness for psychedelic use in medically complex populations
- Assess risks related to neurological involvement, organ dysfunction, medication burden, and frailty
- Apply principles of set, setting, timing, and goals of care in the context of serious illness
- Navigate medication management challenges, including opioids, chemotherapy, and CNS-active drugs
The workshop will also include case-based learning, allowing participants to apply clinical reasoning to realistic scenarios.
