Workshop Overview:

As psychedelic assisted therapies gain momentum and evidence for use in psychiatric conditions, research is expanding to include painful neurologic conditions (e.g. migraines, cluster headaches) and other chronic pain conditions (e.g. lower back pain, cancer pain, chronic pain, phantom limb pain). Due to older evidence suggesting benefits in pain conditions and the ability of psychedelics to modulate neural plasticity, inflammation, and cortical processing, it is reasonable to believe that psychedelics may play an important role in filling unmet treatment needs in pain conditions.

Analgesics are drugs that act to relieve pain. There are many different types of analgesics and pain medications available for myriad pain conditions. Most analgesics do not carry a direct drug-drug interaction potential with psychedelics, although some combinations could have interactions that increase risks. Other analgesics, such as opioids, carry strong sedative effects in the central nervous system and cause effects upon mood or the cardiovascular system that may indirectly interfere with or intensify risks of psychedelic therapy under some circumstances.

The management of analgesic agents in the context of psychedelic therapy and healing processes may be complex. The potential for substance use disorders to exist with analgesic agents may require additional support or therapy structures for successful treatment outcomes. Minimizing or eliminating use of strong psychoactive analgesics may be preferable or intensify effects, however balanced consideration may be given to potential for withdrawal or a pain crisis occurring.

This webinar aims to summarize medical literature pertaining to how analgesics and psychedelics interact with each other and explore the potential of psychedelics to help with pain. It provides and discusses a clinical approach to opioid use that may inform beneficial decision-making regarding management strategies. The official objectives for this webinar are to:

  • Define analgesics and summarize what is known about their interaction potential with commonly used psychedelics
  • Describe pain conditions and ways that psychedelics may be used or benefit them when they are present
  • Discuss strategies for management of analgesics in the context of psychedelic therapy including tapering or temporarily suspending use
