Workshop Overview:

As interest in psychedelic therapies continues to expand, questions surrounding their safety and potential therapeutic role in neurologic conditions have become increasingly common. Disorders such as migraine and Parkinson’s disease involve complex neurochemical, inflammatory, and pharmacologic factors that require careful consideration when evaluating psychedelic use.

This 2-hour webinar, led by Dr. Benjamin Malcolm, PharmD, MPH, provides an evidence-informed exploration of the intersection between psychedelics, neuroinflammation, headache disorders, and neurodegenerative disease.

The first half of the workshop will present a structured lecture reviewing preclinical and clinical data on the immunomodulatory and neurologic effects of psychedelics, including proposed mechanisms relevant to migraine or cluster headaches and Parkinson’s disease

The second half of the session will focus on two case discussions and accompanying multiple choice questions, applying the lecture content to two real-world clinical scenarios:

  • A patient with episodic migraine considering psilocybin, LSD, or DMT while using standard abortive and preventive therapies
  • A patient with early-stage Parkinson’s disease and depression exploring potential risks and benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy in the context of dopaminergic and MAO-B–inhibiting medications

Participants will work through medication interactions, disease-specific risks, candidate selection, and harm-reduction strategies, followed by a facilitated group discussion and live Q&A.

By integrating clinical pharmacology, current research, and practical decision-making frameworks, this webinar aims to help clinicians, facilitators, and psychedelic care professionals navigate neurologic complexity with greater confidence and caution.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline preclinical and clinical evidence supporting potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of psychedelics
  • Describe proposed mechanisms by which psychedelics may influence migraine and cluster headache disorders
  • Discuss safety considerations, contraindications, and drug–drug interactions relevant to serotonergic psychedelics in neurologic conditions
  • Evaluate risks and potential benefits of psychedelic use in Parkinson’s disease across stages of illness
  • Apply lecture concepts to real-world migraine and Parkinson’s disease case scenarios
  • Develop practical harm-reduction and screening strategies for individuals with neurologic comorbidities
