Pharmacology and Drug Interactions of 5-MeO-DMT

Mystery and 5-MeO-DMT

One compound I seem to get more questions about than others is 5-MeO-DMT. It makes sense given there is very little data available, a few cases of death reported involving use, and may be the most reliable in occasioning mystical or transformative types of experiences. In short, it's a substance that  appears to have a lot of potential for both benefit or harm due to its incredibly powerful effects.

5-MeO-DMT: A Molecule on the Rise

5-MeO-DMT is a short-acting and naturally occurring tryptamine psychedelic with powerful entheogenic effects. Interest in use has been skyrocketing in recent years as celebrities endorse 'smoking Toad venom' has profoundly healing properties and researchers scramble to develop the next wonder drug for mental health conditions. Public excitement seems to be outpacing the availability of comprehensive or reliable information about the substance, creating potential for unnecessary harm.

5-MeO-DMT is Naturally Occurring, Yet Different From Classic Tryptamines

5-MeO-DMT is found in certain plant species, in bufo alvarius toad venom, and potentially as an endogenous neurotransmitter in humans. While it shares much pharmacology with other classic tryptamine psychedelics (psilocybin, DMT, LSD) as a serotonin agonist it has notable differences leading to changes in drug interaction potential, particularly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). In sum, I wanted to put together some information that could help persons understand 5-MeO-DMT a little better as well as which substances are likely to pose risks in combination with it.

The Five Guide: Pharmacology and Drug Interactions of 5-MeO-DMT

The Five Guide was put together in an effort to information and educate persons interested in 5-MeO-DMT about the pharmacology, drug interaction risks, potential for Serotonin Toxicity, and some risk management or stratification tools when it comes to considering other serotonergic substances.

The guide covers:

  • The pharmacology of 5-MeO-DMT including its mechanism of action and metabolism
  • Drug interaction potential between 5-MeO-DMT and other substances as well as contraindications
  • A discussion of Serotonin Toxicity with a specific focus on risks of 5-MeO-DMT
  • Stratification of risk of serotonergic substances in conjunction with 5-MeO-DMT
  • General information on risk management of drug interactions
